(updated on June 6th, 2021 room the original February 2021 essay)

I loved the 90s HBO sitcom Dream On as a kid. The main…

Vivianne Castillo is one of the few Black UX/UI (User Experience/User Interface Design) superstars in the U.S. African Americans make up 12 percent of the population in the United States, but we make up just 3 percent of designers across all the design disciplines.

Having worked as a counselor and…

Assimilating for black folks was a survival mechanism.. its a simple fact that the white you looked the better you were treated in my Grandma and mother's (who is of the Silent Generation)

When I was young to go visit my grandma in NC in the summer, she would always say STAY OUT OF THAT HOT SUN

When I was young I thought she was worried we would get heat stroke

I found out years later that it was because she didnt want us getting too dark.

All these habits and behaviors are just passed down from one generation to the other. My sisters would never wear their natural hair.

I dont think any less of them for it. In fact its never crossed my mind

Cherry picked as usual. For your "readers" to have a more nuanced picture

As I saw somewhere else, Woke, especially in 2021 is just another snarl word the right uses against everything they hate.

And like since the days of Jazz, white folks are always (over)using our slang, wearing it out, (everything from hip to hep , to you go girl. to throwing shade to snatching wigs) and we move on to the next word or phrase.. that they will soon wear out and abuse

Oddly enough, Woke is closer to the term "red pilled" that conservatives co-opted from the Matrix movies, made by two trans women and used as a metaphor for it

I’ve always wanted to share my story about living and traveling in Croatia, but I should have NEVER given it to anyone else. It is too complex and layered for a blog.

I dont think I understand this entire essay. As someone else said who is the audience for this except to give yourself a pep talk

What you described is just human nature of all parents especially mothers on Earth, I would protect my family first before anyone else

Its like being on airplane when the oxygen masks drop. You help yourself, then your kids

At least your honest about allyship though, Ill give you that.

Gosh, I have been meaning to, but its a very long complicated story, haha. I moved for love and it didnt work out

I did write about what it was like being black there. which was, an EXPERIENCE haha
