The Myth of Republican Mental Fortitude — A Response To Amber Duke from “The Spectator”
Amber Duke, a writer for The Spectator, Daily Caller, and Newsmax, recently penned a hit piece painting “insane liberals” as mentally unstable following both the 2016 and 2024 elections. This so-called journalism — really just a lazy opinion piece — suggests that Republicans handled electoral losses with grace, particularly when Mitt Romney lost in 2012. But let’s set the record straight.
First, the idea that Republicans remained calm after losses is laughable. Mitt Romney, despite being the GOP nominee in 2012, is now effectively persona non grata within his own party for opposing Trump. The Republican Party’s ongoing purity tests have driven out nearly all moderates. More importantly, as flawed as Romney was as a candidate, he never attempted to turn the United States into a Weimar Republic-like state circa 1933, nor did he weaponize Goebbels-like Nazi propaganda techniques against marginalized groups like undocumented immigrants. The same cannot be said for certain figures within today’s Republican Party.
